Having taught many hundreds of brass players since 1965, Ken Davies has a track record of former students who have played in honor bands, all-state bands, military service bands, college bands and professional ensembles. With a performing background that spans show bands, rock groups, shows, symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo work, he brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and insight to aspiring musicians.
Mr. Davies began private brass teaching during his last two years at University of Wisconsin - Madison at Forbes-Meagher Music Store and quickly developed an active all brass studio.
During
the 1970s and
early 1980s,
Mr. Davies was a full-time trombonist with the immensely popular rock
fusion
group, Gabriel's Brass, based at Walt Disney World
in Orlando,
Florida.
His private brass studio for all brass instruments became known for his
insightful problem-solving for his students' benefit. Adapting to
students'
learning styles even before right and left brain research was known,
Mr.
Davies successfully guided students through foundations and refinements
in sight-reading, improvisation, applicable music theory, high and low
range development, transpositions and other skills. His clientele
ranged
from beginners to adults. Also a composer, Mr. Davies is known for the
unique special studies he often wrote for his students.
His
growing reputation as
a composer is marked by frequent performances of his music from
California and Oregon to New Orleans and New York City. in 2006, the Mississippi
Arts
Commission
awarded him their prestigious Mississippi Performing Artist Fellowship
in Composition. In 2007 the Mississippi Arts Commission nominated Ken
to the nine-state Southern Arts Federation's SouthernArtistry.org
juried
showcase of top regional artists. In April 2009, Ken won the Eastern
Trombone Workshop's National Trombone Composition Competition
with his Three Pieces
for Bass Trombone and Piano.
