This Mac-music section attempts to double  both as an education tool for the newbie and as a convenient resource for the experienced musician or educator. For that reason, the sections are grouped more or less sequentially and elementary notes are added. Some redundancy also appears in the interest of clarity and convenience.

MIDI: Musical Instrument Digital Interface
Everything Starts with Mac MIDI

Essential Tools and Utilities:

Is anybody selling older, used softwares in the MIDI - Audio - Notation realms?

Apple Music Pages

Important Essential Terms:
A Keyboard has black keys and white keys. A Computer Keypad has letters and numbers.
(Piano-like keyboards have been around hundreds of years before typewriter-like "keyboards" came.)
A # is a sharp, not a "pound" sign. A > is an accent, not a "greater than" sign.
"Digital" means numbers, not fingers.

MIDI  Resources and Basic Tutorials

Most newer Macs  come equipped (bundled) with preferred Quicktime 4 (QT4 or later) or possibly even the MicrosoftWindows Media Player for Mac (WMP the usual PC player). Generally, these players will play most any sound and video media that comes across the net. But, if your computer or softwares are older, you may need one or more of the obsolete, no longer supported, hard to find Apple MIDI Manager 2.0.2 Tools. If so, download MIDI_Mgmt_2.0.2.sit.hqx to get (7 items): Read Me, Apple MIDI driver, MIDI Manager, Patch Bay, Patch Bay Help, Patch Bay DA, Serial Switch.  "As-is" with no guarantees.

Important Basic to learn (or remember): MIDI is NOT Digitized Audio! So you cannot convert MIDI files into various audio formats (wav, mp3, aiff, etc.) or vice-versa (unless you happen to be gifted with science and magic). MIDI, by itself, is about data related to "timed sequences of performed computer events minus the actual sounds" (thus the terms "sequencer" and "performance"). Actual sounds may be integrated with and/or related to MIDI events though other hardware and software.

Playing Standard MIDI Files (SMF)
Tutorials, Players, Converters & Resources

MIDI Players, Sound File Players - stand-alone applications that play Standard MIDI Files through your computer MIDI File Conversion Utilities - Not all MIDI files, downloaded or otherwise obtained, are Standard MIDI Files (SMF) playable on a Mac. Drag-n-drop MIDI file converters (sound utilities) change the Macintosh file type/creator program codes to make them generically playable. Advanced MIDI Topics and Tutorials: top

Synths, Keyboards, Interface Hardware

Most keyboards which we commonly call "synths" are not really synthesizers at all, since they do not actually synthesize sound samples from scratch. Rather, these are digital samples players which play factory "pre-sets" of pre-set sound samples. However, we can modify those "patches" (sounds) through patch editing (see below).

MIDI interface hardware: an interface is a mechanical piece that is cabled between (usually) a keyboard sample players ("synth") and a computer. MIDI cables run from keyboard to interface.  Serial cables run from the interface to the computer.

Syd (formerly "SoftSynth") is an instrument editor and software synthesizer by Jim Bumgardner. It has a  graphical "patch cord" interface, and is relatively easy to use, compared to other music languages. It is  particularly suitable for teaching computer music. Both Macintosh and Windows versions are available. Jim wrote Syd so he could reproduce some of the sounds produced by the Buchla 200 analog  synthesizer he used to play with at CalArts in the early 80's. It has since evolved into an interesting computer-music tool in its own right.
