| The American Mother's Day Holiday Tradition - Mother's Day founder, Anna Marie Jarvis, was born in Webster, West Virginia on May 1, 1864. Influenced by her mother, who had helped develop "Mothers Friendship Day", which had been a part of the healing process of the Civil War, Anna began a campaign, in 1907, to establish a national Mother's Day. With help from her supporters, she wrote to ministers, businessmen and politicians. By 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May.
